The Poetry Lounge 2 and 3 - reviews

Booklist - May 1st, 2008

The Poetry Lounge 2: The Power of Poetics.
Dec 2007. Choices, DVD, $49.95. (9781933724188).

A poem, like a play, packs more punch when performed by enthusiastic readers. In this sampled entry in an ongoing Poetry Lounge series, talented, mostly African American “spoken word artists” read their works before a live audience, delivering their lines with passion and hip-hop rhythms. They speak of
inner-city streets and young men hiding their vulnerability beneath brash attitudes. One poet salutes his dying grandmother; another makes a collage of pop-culture icons. In candid interviews, the poets discuss the inspirations for their words, the writing process, and how the performance affects the poem. They urge young writers to read others’ poetry and to study the technical formats before choosing their own style. The series, which also includes The Poetry Lounge 3: The Power of Performance, is based on performances of a weekly open-microphone event in Los Angeles known as Da’ Poetry Lounge. DVD extras include a poetry lesson plan.
