Vaccinations?:
Assessing the Risks and Benefits - reviews

Booklist -June 2008

Vaccinations: Assessing the Risks and Benefits.
Mar 2008. Choices, DVD, $24.95. (9781933724201).

Parents and others concerned with the appropriateness and safety of childhood vaccines will learn much from this seminar delivered by California pediatrician Jay Gordon, who shares his views on the pros and cons of particular vaccinations for newborn babies, older children, teens, and adults. Focusing on why and when to schedule vaccines, he punctuates his lecture with charts, fact-based slides, photographs, archival photos, newspaper headlines relating to medical issues and vaccines, and humorous quips about a pharmaceutical industry intent on selling drugs regardless of patient need. Other topics include discussions of the human immune system, benefits of breastfeeding, and natural ways to prevent childhood illness. A companion Web site includes questions to ask physicians and recommended immunization schedules. A worthwhile resource.

Vaccinations? Assessing the Risks and Benefits ***
(2006) 117 min. DVD: $24.95. Choices, Inc. PPR.

ISBN: 978-1-933724-20-1.
Santa Monica private practitioner Dr. Jay Gordon (also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a faculty teacher at Cedars-Sinai, and UCLA assistant clinical professor) is the speaker for this lengthy seminar on childhood vaccinations. Using an overhead projector to emphasize his main points, Gordon offers a crash course in “Immune System 101,” examining defense mechanisms, risks vs. benefits of vaccines, advancements in treating illnesses and conditions, and noxious ingredients in certain vaccines (and allergic reactions), while also discussing various case studies (including a before and after of a girl with swollen eyes, whose switch to a dairy-free diet worked wonders, and a look at polio in the Amish community). Stating that he’s not “anti-vaccine,” knowledgeable and engaging presenter Gordon argues that it’s better to individualize the use of vaccines in accordance with natural immunities. DVD extras include a weblink to a program guide, as well as an AAP immunization schedule, an overview of recent research, and a list of questions to ask a pediatrician. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)
